The Business Coalition for Educational Excellence (BCEE) at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce announces that it has named 73 schools as 2007 Just for the Kids - New Jersey Benchmark Schools (please click on link below). Just for the Kids - New Jersey Benchmark Schools are schools that have been identified for attaining high rates of student achievement on the state's assessment tests through comparisons of HSPA, GEPA and NJASK test data on the Just for the Kids-New Jersey Web site (www.just4kids.org). Just for the Kids is a powerful tool that helps educators analyze state assessment data and use the information to improve performance. The Just for the Kids website presents fair and relevant pictures of a school’s performance by comparing them with schools elsewhere in the state that have similar student populations. “The Just for the Kids – New Jersey Benchmark Schools should make everyone proud of what is possible in great educational environments” said Dana Egreczky, president, Business Coalition for Educational Excellence. “We hope these schools will stand as role models for others around the state. We owe our young people the best chance for a rewarding future.” View all of the Just for the Kids - New Jersey Benchmark Schools here. Back to top
This full program implementation kit includes all the materials you will need to deploy the program, and also includes directions and materials to deploy the LearnDoEarn Scavenger Hunt. The Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to get the message to students quickly. To learn more about the Scavenger Hunt, or to purchase LearnDoEarn in a Box, click here. If your school has over 500 students, and if more than 75% of those students are low income or minority students, LearnDoEarn staff are available to assist you with raising funds from local sources to cover the costs of LearnDoEarn in a Box. Contact Patty Cullinane for more details at 908-832-5214. Back to top LearnDoEarn is impacting students around the state and around the country. In February, Linden’s high school and middle school students participated in a brand new, exciting activity featured as part of the LearnDoEarn System: the LearnDoEarn Quick Start Scavenger Hunt. News12 New Jersey captured the excitement. Click here to view the videos. Linden is one of many schools implementing the LearnDoEarn program and the LearnDoEarn Scavenger Hunt. The LearnDoEarn Scavenger Hunt is a simple, quick, interactive and fun way to get students in middle and high school to become instantly familiar with key concepts from LearnDoEarn: data-driven messages that will help them make the best possible academic, behavioral, career and financial decisions. The primary goal of the Scavenger Hunt is to get the LearnDoEarn message to students as quickly as possible. It's simple. Schools post the LearnDoEarn posters in strategic places around the building. Students are given a LearnDoEarn Scavenger Hunt Answer Sheet and have one week to 'scavenge' the answers to the questions on the Answer Sheet using information from the posters and from the LearnDoEarn website. At the end of the week, students drop completed Answer Sheets in a LearnDoEarn ballot box. Answer sheets are picked at random from the LearnDoEarn ballot box and the first four completely correct answer sheets generate rewards for the four students who completed them. Winning students are then awarded the prizes that come with the LearnDoEarn Program in a Box (an iPod Shuffle and three store coupons worth $15.00 each). If you wish to conduct a Hunt at your school without purchasing the kit, all you need is a Free password to the Faculty Room, where you will find all the basic materials needed to hold the Hunt at your school – posters, instructions, and Answer Sheets. Prizes can be substituted and provided by the school. Register for the Faculty Room here to get your FREE password.
Back to top This year, when regular school activities wind down, why not give your students some powerful, real-world lessons about the skills and behaviors they’ll need in order to be successfully employed in the 21st century? LearnDoEarn (www.LearnDoEarn.org) helps you do that by providing free, easy-to-use interactive curriculum and activities that will keep your students engaged and motivated even while thoughts of summer fun are threatening to take over. LearnDoEarn mini-curriculum lessons (PowerPoint presentations) present thought-provoking data that promote meaningful discussion in the classroom about things your students are not hearing anywhere else. They will learn what they need to do in middle and high school to get ready for college, work and life. Each lesson can take just one to two class periods. Your juniors and seniors can get an early jump on their futures by reviewing tips on job searching with Make Sure YOU Get the Job, Ace the Interview and Writing Your First Resume. Students will learn that in addition to filling out an application, they may also need to pass pre-employment academic tests and drug and alcohol tests, provide references, and successfully complete a personal interview. And, most employers will also do credit checks, criminal background checks, and online searches of social websites before hiring. Give your high school students a lesson or two in financial literacy as it relates to their personal life decisions with Healthy, Wealthy, and Employed and How to Be a Millionaire. Did you know that some employers are shifting from a smoke-free workplace to a smoke-free workforce due to the high cost of health insurance? Your students need to know that the decisions they are making today will affect their employability tomorrow. Motivate your early middle school students with Be Great by Eight, and give the older ones information that will prepare them to take high school seriously with Choose the Right Course and The Tassel is Worth the Hassle. The long road to a successful life starts in middle school building academic foundations with rigorous course work, doing homework, and getting good grades. Take your students on a Virtual Job Shadowing trip with downloadable webinars featuring speakers with careers in engineering, small business ownership, law, medicine, law enforcement and others. One of our major supporters, FirstEnergy is seeking educators to serve on the Educational Advisory Council for Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L). Volunteers should have experience teaching mathematics, science or technology to serve two-year terms beginning in the Fall. Candidates should be from the JCP&L service territory, which includes the counties of Hunterdon, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Sussex and Warren. The Council meets twice a year at JCP&L in Red Bank. Volunteers receive stipends for reviewing materials and attending meetings. The company also pays for mileage. For additional information and an application contact JCP&L Community Involvement Manager Elaine Vincent. Elaine's email address is mvincent@firstenergycorp.com. |
