PSA Partners with BCEE on New Assessment Literacy Institute-Free Preview Session on November 21.

Increased student achievement doesn't happen by accident or by chance.  Students improve their performance and schools create richer cultures for learning when school leaders commit to intentional school improvement planning. To help you achieve those goals, the BCEE is joining with the New Jersey Principal’s and Supervisors Association (NJPSA) has created an innovative institute that will use available data and best practices to improve school districts around the state.

Your participation will include a review of your current academic performance profile against schools with similar student populations that are reaching higher levels. And, using that and other information, the institute will prepare school and district leaders to carefully identify where school resources must be concentrated to bring about the greatest improvement in student learning.

The institute will run over a course of seven non-consecutive days, running from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and includes a continental breakfast and lunch.  We have established a very affordable fee of $3800 for a team that can include up to six participants.  The sessions will be conducted at NJPSA headquarters in Monroe Township. Join us for a free preview session on the afternoon of November 21.

Just for the Kids is Just That Much Better for ’05-‘06

In a short period of time, the highly acclaimed Just for the Kids (J4TK) school comparisons web-based database has established itself as a powerful tool in helping educators analyze fair and relevant data about their schools toward creating blueprints for improvement or continued success.

Log into the J4TK-NJ home page at www.just4kids.org. A search engine allows you to quickly locate the school of your choice. Pages are also highlighted with different colors to feature J4TK school reports and best practice state studies.  This and many other features improve the look and feel, navigation, and consistency of information found on the website and were contributed by National Center for Educational Accountability (NCEA), national sponsor of Just for the Kids, to increase the value of information shared on the site for all users.

Moving through the site, Just for the Kids interactive dashboards present school and district communities an overall understanding of performance within their entire district at a glance and allow them to easily view J4TK School Reports at the grade and subject level within individual schools, including new best in state charts.  The addition of best in state charts provides schools a way to always have a higher goal for student achievement in mind.  New links provided from the dashboard pages connect users with best practice evidence collected from not only best in state schools, but high-performing schools throughout the country.

You can see the new data pictures once you have located an individual school.

Just for the Kids Consistently High-Performing Schools online data tools have just recently become available for elementary schools in several states.  Next year, these new data pictures will be available for middle and high school students as well. These tools equip school leaders with a user-friendly resource of information regarding consistently high-performing schools in their state, and connect them to information about their school’s proximity to high-performance.

Learn About National Board Certification Without Leaving School

How can you avoid New Jersey’s notorious traffic, attend a meeting in your slippers and learn about the most prestigious credential in the teaching profession?  Simple. Participate in a webinar hosted by the Business Coalition for Educational Excellence (BCEE) offered with the support of State Farm Insurance. Webinars are web-assisted teleconferences delivered over the Internet and telephone, so you can participate anywhere that you have a computer and phone—school or home.  The BCEE will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday, November 30 at 3:30 pm to provide detailed information about certification to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards including:  incentives, subsidy funding, support and much more.

Our November Webinar follows the three October sessions delivered to more than 100 New Jersey educators.  Due to the continued demand for information on National Board Certification, the BCEE has scheduled the November Webinar.

And remember, if you’re interested in joining the field of candidates for certification to the National Board for 2006, the BCEE encourages you to begin your application process now.  For more information on applying contact the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards at 800-22-TEACH or Donna Custard at 609-989-7888 for general information.

Solid – and Scholarly -- Growth in New Jersey

Just two years after its introduction, the State Scholars - NJ message is spreading around the state.  This year, Scholars, part of the "Learn. Do. Earn." (LDE) Student Credentialing System, which encourages students to challenge themselves today so that they can succeed tomorrow, will be deployed in more than 16 schools.  The growth of those programs is being driven by the generosity of a number of companies who are coming forward to sponsor the program in those schools.  The BCEE thanks AT&T, Bank of America, Colgate Palmolive, Maher Terminals, South Jersey Industries, Advance Realty and Sun Bank, who are all Scholars partners for the 2005-2006 school year.

A number of additional schools will be joining into the program by way of an "electronic" membership to the Scholars family.  Through electronic sponsorships, we can deliver the program to schools through our new LDE website.  Participation in the electronic delivery of the program is open and FREE to all schools in sponsored counties for 2005-2006.  We want to welcome Mercer County (Washington Group. Int'l), Union County (AGL Resources) and Passaic County  (Washington Mutual, Berlex & BAE Systems), who comprise our participating counties for this school year.  If you are a superintendent in one of these counties, keep an eye on your mail!  You will be receiving an invitation to a Scholars information session where you can learn more about the program and how to participate.

This student-focused program is in demand by schools, and we are working to find sponsors for interested schools. The program includes curriculum, ancillary marketing materials for students and parents, and an interactive student website where students can manage their progress against Scholars and other program goals.

Business organizations in 13 states around the country are offering similar efforts to the State Scholars-NJ program, focusing on strategies to bring about sustained high school improvement.  They are in Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.
